Our Story

Asa was started by two friends, both with a passion for vegan food and cooking. With backgrounds in the nonprofit sector, social enterprise, and environmental work, it became their focus in life to make the world a better place.

In 2018, these friends decided to take over a sixty-year-old shop house, to create a restaurant of their dreams. This was the beginning of what has become Asa Vegan Kitchen and Studio.

Asa is a Thai word meaning to volunteer, to step forward, and to offer. We believe that the volunteer spirit is important in communities. People can use their specialties, time, and energy to help others and society. Also, through volunteering, we are able to gain meaningful life experiences.

Asa has become a place where people can enjoy a conscientious meal, hang out and connect with locals through volunteer opportunities, and learn in classes and workshops.

At Asa, we promise you that we do our best to create and offer selections of healthy vegan food and conscientious lifestyle services. We always think about the earth first, before us. It’s our responsibility to operate our restaurant and studio in the most environmentally friendly and sustainable way possible.

Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. We are beyond grateful.

Peace and Love,

Ploy and Rosy

What We Do

ART

Asa has a collection of hill tribe textiles. As civilisation creeps into each hill tribe community, traditional art and handicraft skills are becoming lost in our modern world. Each year, there are fewer and fewer opportunities to acquire hand-made tribal styles of clothing, textiles, and art. With their experience working with hill tribe communities in the past, our founders have a passion for preserving the old and beautiful works of art created by hill tribe women. Many of our art pieces are framed, for everyone to admire. Some of the framed works are available for purchase. If you have inquiries about any piece of art at Asa, please speak to our staff or contact info@asavegankitchen.com

INGREDIENTS

Most of our ingredients are sourced from small, local producers, as we like to support local business and sustainable farming. We believe that fresh ingredients from caring people are the key to a great meal. We are trying our best to serve you not only nutritious food, but also guilt-free. We do not use palm oil, because the palm oil industry is a big contributor to deforestation and mass wildlife death in various countries in South East Asia, including Thailand.

EARTH

We are a part of a global movement to eliminate plastic straws and single-use plastic containers. Often, when one purchases food or drink with plastic straws and containers, these items end up in the landfills. Many plastics take about 500 years to break down. We offer eco-friendly options for takeaway food containers, made from rapidly-renewable, responsibly-sourced resources like sugarcane pulp, bioplastic, and degradable paper. Currently, biodegradable containers are not widely produced and used by the public, making these of a higher cost than regular plastic containers. If you require your food or drink for take-away, please help us by contributing 5 baht for each takeaway cup and 10 baht for each food container.

WORKSHOPS

At Asa’s studio, we often organized interesting workshops, classes, and retreats. Our goal, in these offerings, is to contribute to the lifelong learning of participants. Topics include art, culture, lifestyle, and sustainability. Please follow us on Facebook to keep up on our activities and workshops. Are you an expert? Are you looking for a venue to share your knowledge? Feel free to let us know. We will be happy to help you organise your class for you.

VINTAGE RETAIL

Back by popular demand, we have hand selected more vintage cloths that we know our customers will love. Opting for vintage clothing is a way of contributing to a more sustainable world. The fashion industry, and fast fashion in particular, is a major contributor to the waste in landfills, water pollution, and has a very large carbon footprint.

VOLUNTEER CENTRE

Asa believes in volunteer spirit. We go out of our way to help you find meaningful volunteer opportunities in Chiang Mai and throughout Northern Thailand. We offer this assistance free of charge. You can volunteer to help a local family, a community, or a charitable organization. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us and let us know your area of interest. We are HAPPY to help coordinate and find you a volunteer placement.
